  • Does this scene sound familiar to you?

Your alarm clock goes off bright and early and you're in the shower in under 10 seconds. Today is going to be a busy day, so it's best to get to work early.

Like every morning, as you leave the house, you look for an ACCIONA shared motorbike using the mobile App. You find one available right where you are, like every morning. And in 15 minutes, you're sitting at your desk.

You've avoided the traffic jam that you've managed to avoid since this service exists, you've left the motorbike parked up—it will shortly be picked up by another user—and spent less time worrying about how to get to the office than it takes to grab a coffee from the machine. Traffic is now one less problem in your routine...

But… have you ever wondered what happens during the night, while you're asleep, for that motorbike to be right there, where you need it, with its electric battery fully charged and its mechanics checked? Sometimes we think things just happen, that they appear out of the blue, like when you stumble across a clump of porcini mushrooms that wasn't there the day before. Sometimes we think things just appear when we need them, and we think no further.

However, for each ACCIONA shared electric motorbike to be available, clean, checked over and ready right when you need it, it takes a multitude of people and a whole framework of specific and minute details that we want to tell you about. How are the batteries charged? Who decides on the location of the motorbikes? What kind of maintenance is done out on the street? What data does the bike generate on each trip?

    • 1. NON-STOP SERVICE

Working around the clock—and even more intensively, if that's possible, at night—operators tasked with different activities make sure that every morning each and every ACCIONA motorbike in each city has been checked over and is ready for use.
    • 2. JOCKEYS ARE THE FIRST TO ARRIVE

Jockeys provide rapid assistance for the ACCIONA motorbike service. They patrol the city on electric motorbikes to deal with incidents reported to them by the Control Centre and resolve issues reported by the motorcycles, such as changing a rear-view mirror in situ, replacing a helmet or helping a user who has left something in the top case.
    • 3. IF POSSIBLE, EVERYTHING IS RESOLVED OUT ON THE STREET

When an incident occurs, the Jockey closest to the reported incident comes to resolve it. The aim is to always offer an on-site solution to keep the motorbike in use. But if the problem is more serious, they call out the recovery service to have the motorcycle removed as soon as possible and repaired in the workshop.
    • 4. REMOVING MOTORBIKES, A JOB FOR THE RECOVERY SERVICE

If a Jockey is unable to repair a motorbike, they will call out the recovery service to come and remove it. Recovery service operatives drive a van with room for up to eight motorbikes. Their job is to take damaged motorbikes to the workshop and put repaired motorbikes back into service.
    • 5. BATTERY PACKS READY FOR USE

When a motorbike consumes 80% of its battery charge, it automatically locks and sends an alert to the control centre. A swapper is then sent to replace the battery with a fully charged one as soon as possible. The warehouse holds an army of batteries that are ready for use.
    • 6. THE SWAPPER, ALL BATTERIES ARE CHARGED BEFORE DAWN

Swappers are responsible for monitoring which motorbikes need a new battery; they use an application to help them do this. They work around the clock and much of their activity takes place at night. Their goal is for all motorbikes in the service to have 100% battery charge at dawn, ready to complete the first trips of the day.
    • 7. RENEWABLE ENERGY THROUGHOUT THE SERVICE

Batteries are also replaced out on the street. Swappers travelling in electric vans can carry nine fully charged batteries at a time; an app guides them to where batteries need to be replaced. All of the energy used in the ACCIONA motosharing service is 100% renewable.
    • 8. CHARGING ROOMS

Batteries are pre-charged in the warehouse. This is where the charging rooms with capacity for ten batteries per unit are located. Batteries are ready to go back on the road within three and a half hours. The electricity used in the charging rooms in all cities is of 100% renewable origin.
    • 9. THOROUGH CLEANING IN TIMES OF CORONAVIRUS

One of the most important things swappers are tasked with during COVID-19 is disinfecting each of ACCIONA's motorbikes over night in preparation for the following day. This ensures the safety of users in the challenging 'new normal'.
    • 10. COVID-19-PREVENTION PACK IN EACH TOP CASE

All ACCIONA bikes come with a sanitising kit in the top case to protect the health of users and fight against possible infections. This includes wipes for cleaning sensitive parts of the motorbike, hairnets to avoid contact with helmets and hand sanitiser for users to clean their hands before and after each trip.
    • 11. THE ALL-SEEING EYE

The Control Centre monitors every detail of the service online and in real time. Operators answer users' questions and resolve incidents, communicate with street operators and are aware at all times of the location of each ACCIONA motorbike and the charge status of their batteries.
    • 12. HOW DO WE DECIDE THE LOCATION OF EACH MOTORBIKE?

With the help of Big Data, the Control Centre manages the location of the entire fleet of motorbikes in real time. Using heat maps, it detects where there is a greater demand and prompts operators to respond to the demand; using cold maps, it monitors how long a motorcycle has been stationary, the reason, and whether action is needed.
    • 13. MOTORBIKES THAT MEASURE IT ALL

ACCIONA motorbikes feature complex sensors and telemetry systems. They are able to report in real time whether a bike has suffered an accident and the reasons, such as the motorbike tilting or a bump that has affected the steering axle… This makes it possible to immediately interact with users and go to where they are located.
    • 14. MAKING IT EASY FOR USERS

One of the key moments for users is parking up correctly at the end of the service. The app recommends taking a picture of the parked motorbike at the end of each trip as evidence in case the administration department raises a claim with the user.
    • 15. EACH TRIP IS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR FOR THE PLANET

ACCIONA's motorbike service is based on sustainability, with its entire fleet of vehicles powered by 100% certified renewable energy. At the end of each trip, users are informed of their travel time as well as the amount of CO₂ that has been saved from going into the atmosphere.
    • 15. MOTORBIKE TRICKS WORTH KNOWING

ACCIONA motorbikes come with two types of stand so the user can choose the most convenient way to park them. At the front, they come with two USB ports for charging mobile phones and a hook for hanging a bag or backpack. In the top case, there are two helmets to be able to carry a second passenger.
    • ACCIONA is the world's largest motosharing operator, with a fleet of more than 10,000 motorbikes across several European cities, including Madrid, Barcelona, Rome and Milan.

Sustainability is the basis for ACCIONA's mobility service, not only because it involves non-polluting electric motorbikes whose charge energy is certified as 100% renewable, but also because it comes with a range of electric recharge vehicles.

Users have already made more than four million trips since the service started and demand for this type of sustainable mobility in cities continues to grow. This is why all operators are committed to ensuring that every morning, before the city wakes up, each and every ACCIONA motorbike has been checked and is ready for use.

    • Every morning all ACCIONA motorbikes in the streets have been recharged and checked and are ready for use.
